Rescue teams after an explosion at Maltby Main Colliery (1923)

On 28 July 1923 an explosion at Maltby Main Colliery in South Yorkshire took the lives of 27 miners. This photograph shows one of the local rescue at the scene. Despite their efforts the rescue attempt was abandoned after twelve hours when it became clear that no one could have survived underground. Only one man’s body was ever recovered.
