Despite the codification of association rules and the development of the modern professional game, older traditions of folk or crowd football continued all the way through the twentieth century. This photograph shows the Ba’ game played between ‘Uppies’ and ‘Doonies’ through the streets of Kirkwall in the Orkneys in 1920.
