The Trickster Prince

Matt Houlbrook: mobile historian; beard growing, head shaving; occasional cycling.

Social climbing, society glamour and confidence tricks (1927)

Compare and contrast:

1. Miss Nancy Kenyon in Henry Cecil’s Book of Beauty (1928):

2. The adventuress, social climber and convicted fraudster Josephine O’Dare in the World’s Pictorial News (1927)

Society status is all about style, right?

If it were ‘The Book of Class Privilege’ the underlying dynamic would be (only slightly) more out in the open.

      Very true.

I was quite pleased to put the two images together though: that’s at least a sentence in the book…

Do we still have adventuresses? And is there still a “society” left to climb?

Have you read my book “Whatever Happened to Trixie Skyrme ” The true story of al Josephine O’ Dare. Considerable interest is in a film of her life has resulted in screen play written.
