How do you know when to trust somebody? In this 1927 Sunday News cartoon by Victor Hicks the “democratic intentions” of the young Earl of Bilgewater end in farce. Neither the young woman he courts nor the police officers and hotel porters he encounters will believe the title and status he claims—conscious, perhaps, of the growing number of cases of ordinary men and women masquerading as members of the aristocracy in the decade after the Great War.
